Chick Chalet
Been building on a chicken house/lot last couple weeks as time permits.....Armed Peasant has some White Leghorns ready to come to my house, and I'm trying to get fitting housing ready.....nothing to compare with TechGuy's.....but decent, anyway....
Clearing a pad for house and lot..... http://www.digistash.com/data/026a39...9_p125161.jpeg Foundation http://www.digistash.com/data/026a39...9_p125162.jpeg http://www.digistash.com/data/026a39...9_p125163.jpeg Walls framed.....size is 10x12 http://www.digistash.com/data/026a39...9_p125165.jpeg Roof on....siding going up....my best side photo... Lower door will be a cleanout when done, pull tractor bucket up to door, sweep litter directly into bucket, take to garden. http://www.digistash.com/data/026a39...9_p125175.jpeg Sprayed a coat of barn red on it today. Lower two doors are for chickens....fence will join house w/gate when house is done.... http://www.digistash.com/data/026a39...9_p125176.jpeg Still have gable ends and soffit/roof rake to finish.... |

Re: Chick Chalet
Does it ever rain, or get dark, or any other type of objectionable obstacle occur in your neck of the woods? Great pictures as always! I really need to spend some time in your state, I suspect I'd find my retirement location!
Nothing more fun than a pile of materials, a good plan, some cold drinks, and the only drop dead date is your drop dead date. |
Re: Chick Chalet
A man driving down a country road sees a beautiful farm. Green pastures, painted fences, great farm house .... tight as a pin. The farmer is plowing a field coming toward the admiring man. The man waves the farmer down, and says .... "I just wanted you to know that you have the most beautiful farm I have ever seen. God has blessed you with such a farm." The farmer replies ..." He sure has....but you should have seen this place when He was in charge."
Nice job friend.... :smokin: |

Re: Chick Chalet
Why can't you do things half-ass like the rest of us?!??!?!?
:applause_ Great coop! |
Re: Chick Chalet
chicken house?
that looks better than some people houses that I have seen. |
Re: Chick Chalet
A happy hen is a productive hen...
You boys are going to be swimming in eggs with all of the pretty coops we are seeing around here! Beautiful, Andy...thanks for sharing! |
Re: Chick Chalet
Hey Andy, Another well built project ready for some food production.
What I like is the grassed in grazing area in front of the "chalet" for your hens. The best to you and your family for this food producing season. I've started 3 new 4x24 raised beds this season. I skiped the compost pile and direct bury all the compost material into the new beds...let worms do the work. In my new greenhouse I'm growing sweet potatoes that can tolerate and thrive in the 90+ heat..just give'm plenty of water. Have a good summer my friend. |
Re: Chick Chalet
Very nice.
I just built a small tractor for my first attempt at raising chickens. Thinking about getting a few Barred Rocks. Yours puts mine to shame. Best of luck with them. |
Re: Chick Chalet
A veritable pullet palace. Nice work.
|
Re: Chick Chalet
Please excuse my ignorance.
It looks like you have the cinder blocks there up a bit from the foundation, leaving a hollow space beneath the floor of the coop. Whats the reason for it? Temperature control to keep em from getting too hot or cold? |
Re: Chick Chalet
I cant specifically rember but i think chickens love the sun for laying eggs.
Skylight maybe benefiscial? |
Re: Chick Chalet
With a house like that, your chickens are bound to get uppity. Maybe they'll lay a golden egg.
|
Re: Chick Chalet
#1 im kinda impressed i didnt realize Andy had any sorta flat ground to work with from all his other projects i figured he was half mountain goat.
#2 i dont see a nail gun in the siding picture i didnt know anyone built without a nail gun anymore #3 that looks like a insulated residential door on the building......are you sure your not building "mother-in-law" quarters ?? |
Re: Chick Chalet
That's one FINE coop, defiantly not east Tennessee material. Heck most around here keep them tied to a half of a blue barrel or an a-frame made of tin! But those chickens dont give eggs, theyre show chickens LOL! You know that, that fence won't hold chickens, especially White Leghorns, they have to be the most curious of any chicken! They'll cruse through that fence like it wasn't even there. The holes are too big. Awful nice coop though!

Re: Chick Chalet
Im pretty sure Andy knows that, check out the trench the fence is set into.
Have you ever done anything half-assed Andy? |
Re: Chick Chalet
looks like a fence to keep critters out of the coop......not to keep chickens in
|

that way they can free range and still be have an area for protection |
Re: Chick Chalet
Yeah.....the fence is for predator control. The inside of the fence ( and over head netting to come ) will lined with 1"x1" chicken wire to control the chickens.
Heimdhal: The foundation gets the wood floor off the ground while keeping anything like skunks, raccoons, etc from living under the house. |
Re: Chick Chalet
Andy, when you build these things, do frame these things up straight out of your head? Or do you sketch out a quick and rough plan first?
|
Re: Chick Chalet
Nothing less than 100k do I waste paper on.....and less than 50k, the level stays in the truck.
